After an amazing sell-out season, Uta capped off a great Adelaide Fringe Festival by winning the John Chataway Innovation Award. A very special honour, and one she is very proud of. FROM the moment you arrive at the venue until well after you leave, Uta Uber Kool Ja and her faithful assistant George are the hosts with the most.

Throwing you head first into their hotel room after-party this is immersive theatre at its best. Uta is woman of contradictions, mood swings and diva antics with her days in the spotlight dimmed and a trail of failed marriages behind her. But she is irrepressible and impossible to dislike as she cajoles her unwitting guests - that’s you dear audience members - into entertaining her whims and flattering her ego.

George plays the gay but straight shooting guy to Uta’s flamboyant fallen star routine as they bounce off the audience interaction but follow a closely crafted running sheet.

Champagne is liberally dosed to guests, dancing is mandatory and costumes and props abound. Only open-minded people need apply, don’t bring a conservative mate or date along to this one.

But it is the closing chapter that will really leave you with food for thought. Uta and George aren’t just a crazy hotel room romp, they have an important message for you to walk away with. Stripping back the bravado in the closing stages of the performance, Uta shows us all how reinvention can be a powerful tool but, embracing where you’ve come from is the most liberating lesson of all.

The buzz
During a pre-show interview, Uta assured us that Adelaide will be known as “Utalaide” after she’s finished with it. Turns out she could be right…

The vibe
Set in a second-floor Hotel Richmond hotel room, this intimate affair is open to just 20 audience members per show. Melbourne actress Georgina Symes brings fictional character Uta alive using the entire hotel room as her stage. Yes, even the bathroom. From the moment we walk through the hotel doors Uta’s mixed-up world unfolds. It’s a delightful mix of rock-star shenanigans, designer debauchery, and earnest meltdowns all washed down with a load of champagne. Exasperated assistant George is there to mop up the spills, top up champagne and divert washed-up diva tantrums.

Reality bites
Hand over your champas Pats and Eddie. Eat your heart out Madonna… in bed with Uta is all the rage. Crazy costumes, a flash of nipple and a party game or two fill this hour-long show. Pinch yourself when the clock strikes ‘that’s all folks’ - these characters are so believable you’ll be sad to hang up your sequins and leave. For most mere mortals this is the closest you’ll get to a real-live rockin’ hotel room after party.

We’re telling our mates… this is our top tip for 2012. Adjust your spandex and hit the hotel with your inhibitions set low. At just 20 people per show, get snappy - word will spread like a rock stars’ venereal disease.
